The world is spinning faster it seems. Like all the air is a bit too thick, a bit too tense.
Sam's facing a prophesied future heavy with burdens. A destiny he thought about in dreams but never took to such dedication. He had a life to live first. The world seems to have put this on his shoulders and now he's facing living up standards to not disappoint many, or just shucking responsibility and living his own path.
Kyra was coerced into joining a group she didn't believe in, to infiltrate another group that had tried to kill her, to travel to the dark land of tortured souls, and return to find the traces of her have been removed. She's come full circle. Now, unlike Sam, nothing is expected of her. In a way, it's a more burdensome potential.
Xander has done what Xander always does. He's there. He smokes. He survives somehow. Yet like a messenger, many different forces are going to thrust him into duties that may either save the world, or bring everything crashing down.
Vince has been reunited with his wife who has somehow become the first spirit they've met to manifest without a host. He's now got tunnel vision, one goal. To find their son. But the heart of plague and violence is thick, and his son is theoretically in the very center of it.
But there are terrible things ahead. The future that the Shadow Council was afraid of, a world where Sam had given everyone free universal healthcare, is in danger. A new future has been written from nowhere. A new group no one saw coming has changed both the dystopian cyberpunk future of the Shadow Council and the utopian galaxy spanning future of Sam's prophecy.
The new future is looking more and more like endless madness, violence, and the complete breakdown of not only society, but reality itself.
